In the JFK administration I was a White House Fellow. In those days it was a much larger program than the small insider program it later became. President Kennedy’s intention was to involve many young Americans in government in order to keep idealism alive as a counter to the material interests of lobby groups. I don’t know if the program still exists. If it does, the idealism that was its purpose is long gone.

It makes no difference who you vote for, the secret government won’t change. As Michael Glennon Professor of International Law at  Tufts University says: ‘The people we elect aren’t the ones calling the shots” The Boston Globe explains: The voters who put Barack Obama in office expected some big changes. From the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping to Guantanamo Bay to the Patriot Act, candidate Obama was a defender of civil liberties and privacy, promising a dramatically different approach from his predecessor.

Almost half the American voters are going to vote “against” rather than “for,” in order to ensure that either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump doesn’t win the presidential election, according to a poll released this week. RT reports: Nearly half the supporters of Republican candidate Donald Trump plan to vote for him out of fear that Democrat Hillary Clinton might become president. And it’s the same, vice versa, for those who plan to vote for Hillary. “This phenomenon is called negative partisanship,” Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, told Reuters.

“The two living Republican past presidents, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, have no plans to endorse Trump, according to their spokesmen.” So said the lead story in The Washington Post.

Graceless, yes, but not unexpected. The Bushes have many fine qualities. Losing well, however, is not one of them.

As the United States comes to grips with the possibility of Donald Trump sitting in the White House making final judgments on U.S. and world affairs, a 1700% increase in renounced citizenship,compared to the Bush era, has been reported by the US Treasury Department. An exodus of U.S. citizens is even more likely after he became the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican party when his rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich dropped out of the race.
