Donald Trump will give a foreign policy speech later today as part of his campaign’s attempt to present him as a more credible general election candidate. He’s speaking at an event sponsored by the Center for the National Interest (former President Nixon is not amused), which will probably produce another round of arguments about Trump’s supposed realism.
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, and arguably the biggest loser from last night's "Acela Primary", said he will make a major announcement at 4 p.m. on Wednesday but gave no other details.
Based on tangential evidence, however, Cruz will most likely announce that he has picked Carly Fiorina as a vice presidential candidate, even though he no longer has even a mathematical chance of winning enough delegates to be given the nomination.
President Obama has asked NATO ally Germany to actively deploy troops along NATO’s eastern borders, raising the fear of an invasion by Russia. The West is afraid of a Russian invasion of Europe based on Russia’s annexation of Crimea. NATO is expanding eastwards because of it, giving the Russian’s a legitimate reason to fear an invasion. Russia saw the Ukrainian conflict from the start as an attempt by the west to destabilize the region and encroach upon Russian interests.
One of the curious aspects of the GOP campaign is that John Kasich has not done better, especially in the northeastern or mid-Atlantic states where “moderate Republicanism” still has a political resonance. David Drucker contemplated the surprising Kasich weakness and cited one strategist who concluded “Kasich has proven there is no market for a defiant left of center Republican.”
Security services in Sweden have been put on high alert in connection with a potential terrorist attack threat from ISIS. Intelligence officials say that several ISIS militants arrived in Sweden recently in order to carry out attacks on civilian targets in Stockholm. “Right now we’re gathering information and intelligence and coordinating with our national and international partners,” security police (Säpo) press spokesman Simon Bynert told the TT news agency.
