On Saturday, a delegation from Syria’s “main opposition” showed up in Geneva for UN-brokered peace talks, in what is supposed to represent the first steps towards some manner of negotiated settlement to the country’s protracted civil war.

“The 17-strong team from the Saudi-backed Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC), including political and militant opponents of Assad in the country's 5-year-old civil war, is expected to have a first meeting with the U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura on Sunday,” Reuters reports.

As Donald Trump surges ahead in Iowa, taking the bellicose billionaire even closer to winning the Republican nomination, President Obama is busy trying to counter the GOP frontrunner’s message about “radical Islamic extremism.”

On Thursday, Donald Trump made what could have been a costly gamble.

The brazen billionaire skipped the final GOP presidential debate before the Iowa caucuses and held his own, competing event “for veterans.”

Of course it wasn’t really “for veterans.” It was “for Trump,” who figured that he may be able to bolster his anti-establishment credentials by refusing to participate.
