Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, 2016, Republicans awoke to learn they had won the lottery. Donald Trump had won the presidency by carrying Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. All three states had gone Democratic in the last six presidential elections.
The GOP had won both houses of Congress. Party control of governorships and state legislatures rivaled the halcyon years of the 1920s.
Just over a year ago we wrote about Paul Manafort resigning from the Trump campaign amid outrage over his consulting firm's ties to a lobbying campaign designed to sway American public opinion in favor of the Ukraine's pro-Russsian government (see: FBI Probes Firm Belonging To Brother Of Clinton Campaign Chair For Ukraine Corruption Ties).
A new group of CalExit activists are hoping they can secede (see what we did there?) where two predecessor groups failed in efforts to force California's independence from the United States of America. Ironically, you would think that removing California from the union would be something that Republicans and Democrats could actually agree on...so we remained perplexed as to why this process is proving so difficult.
In an otherwise boring day, Trump sparked some excitement earlier today when he announced that he will make a "very big announcement" during a planned rally in West Virginia tonight. Moments ago, the NYT spoiled the surprise when it unveiled what the announcement is: West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, a Democrat who was elected last year even as President Trump carried the state by 42 points, is expected to announce Thursday night at a rally with Mr. Trump that he is changing parties.
