Ranked: Where Do the World’s Developers Live?

The global developer community has expanded rapidly over the past five years. India has emerged as one of the world’s largest developer hubs, second only to the U.S.

This visualization, created in partnership with Adobe, ranks the world’s 10 largest developer communities in 2025, using data from GitHub. It also compares their size with 2020 and shows how quickly each community has grown.

India Has 21.9 Million Developers

The U.S. has the world’s largest developer community, with 28 million developers in 2025. That is up from 10.2 million in 2020.

Country # Developers 2020 (millions) # Developers 2025 (millions) 5-year CAGR (%)
U.S. 10.2 28.0 21.0
India 4.5 21.9 34.4
China 6.1 10.7 10.8
Brazil 1.5 6.9 33.3
UK 1.7 4.9 21.7
Japan 1.2 4.5 28.0
Germany 1.4 4.4 24.4
Indonesia 0.9 4.4 33.2
Russia 1.4 4.2 23.1
Canada 1.2 3.5 22.2

India ranks second with 21.9 million developers. Its developer community has grown significantly from 4.5 million in 2020.

China ranks third with 10.7 million developers, less than half India’s total. Brazil follows with 6.9 million, while the UK rounds out the top five with 4.9 million.

Japan, Germany, and Indonesia each have between 4.4 million and 4.5 million developers. Russia and Canada complete the ranking with 4.2 million and 3.5 million, respectively.

India’s Developer Community Is Growing Fastest

India recorded the fastest five-year growth rate among the 10 countries shown. Its developer community grew at a compound annual growth rate of 34.4% between 2020 and 2025. It was also projected to overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest developer community by 2028.

Brazil was close behind at 33.3%, followed by Indonesia at 33.2%. Japan also recorded strong annual growth of 28.0%.

By comparison, the U.S. developer community grew by 21.0% annually. China recorded the slowest growth among the countries ranked, at 10.8%.

Bringing Technical Documents Together

As developer communities grow, so does the volume of work that surrounds the code. Technical specifications, documentation, review feedback, and countless project files end up spread across teams.

This is where AI-powered workspaces like PDF Spaces in Adobe Acrobat come in. They bring all those documents into one place, so teams can organize project materials, ask questions across multiple files, and collaborate without switching between tools.
