White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that there is a “deep state” in the United States and it is trying to undermine the government of President Donald Trump. The term deep state, or derin devlet in Turkish, originated in 1950s Turkey and refers to a secretive network of influential members of the military or government agencies that operates outside the democratic system. The deep state is believed to be involved in the secret manipulation or control of government policy.
