Mysterious 70-Mile Crack Opens Up In Antarctica

A mysterious 70-mile crack has opened up in an ice sheet in Antarctica which scientists say threatens to destroy a nearby research station.  The Halley VI research station is currently being relocated as the crack continues to grow bigger. “If [the crack] continues to move and the ice breaks off, the station would be on the wrong side of the crack,” Athena Dinar, a spokesperson for the British Antarctic Survey said. Livescience.com reports: Snapped by scientists on NASA’s IceBridge mission, the shot shows a rift in Larsen C, an ice shelf that is floating off the Antarctic Peninsula.

Remains Of Ancient City Found In Antarctica

An American television crew that have been missing for the last 14 years may have left behind video evidence of an ancient city in Antarctica, according to archaeologist Jonathan Gray.  The Californian TV crew went missing in 2002 after filming a mission by U.S. Navy SEALs in Antarctica. Huge Lake Spotted Lurking Beneath The Antarctic Ice

Satellite imagery has revealed evidence of an enormous lake buried beneath the East Antarctic ice sheet.  Gizmodo reports: The first hints of the lake, presented at the European Geosciences Union Meeting in Vienna this week, include a series of mysterious linear grooves, which appear to cut across more than 600 miles (1000 kilometers) of Princess Elizabeth Land, toward the eastern coast of Antarctica.

150,000 Antarctica Penguins Die After Getting Trapped By Massive Iceberg

A grounded iceberg the size of Rome has rendered an Adelie penguin colony landlocked in Antarctica, leading to the death of almost 95% of the population. 150,000 penguins from Cape Dencion have died since iceberg B09B lodged itself in their bay in 2011 forcing them to trek 60km for food. Times of India reports: An estimated 150,000 penguins of Cape Denison in Commonwealth Bay have been killed since the iceberg measuring 1,120 square miles – larger than Luxemberg – forced them to trek 70 miles for food.
