Study Suggests Aged Garlic Extract Can Slow Plaque Build-Up In Arteries

A research study by the UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed) suggests aged garlic extract taken as a supplement could reduce the accumulation of certain types of plaque in the arteries and help prevent heart disease. The new study is scheduled for publication in the Journal of Nutrition. Science Daily reports: The research, conducted at LA BioMed, found a reduction in the amount of low-attenuation plaque, or “soft plaque,” in the arteries of patients with metabolic syndrome who took Aged Garlic Extract. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by obesity, hypertension and other cardiac risk factors.

51 people have died as a result of a deadly outbreak of swine flu across Ukraine.  Hospitals in east Ukraine, where 12 people have lost their lives, are saying that they lack the crucial drugs needed to treat patients. Chinese Man Excretes 6 Metre Tapeworm After Years Of Stomach Pains

A giant tapeworm measuring 20 feet long has been discovered by doctors after it was excreted by a Chinese man who had complained of stomach aches. The Daily Mail reports: The 38-year-old had gone to hospital after three days of vomiting and feeling weak. There, he told doctors that over the past two years he had suffered from pain in his stomach and abdomen, loss of appetite, weight loss and long-term anaemia due to iron deficiency. Medics from the Hubei University of Medicine, in Shiyan, China, examined him but found ‘nothing remarkable’, the New England Journal of Medicine reports.

New Research Shows Statins Increases The Risk Of Heart Disease

New research warns that people taking the controversial statins drugs are more likely to suffer from hardening of the arteries, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease. Researchers also found  that the drugs block a process that protects the heart, which can then cause, or worsen, heart failure. They also point out that the hypothesis that statins protect the heart by lowering cholesterol is flawed and that high cholesterol is not necessarily linked to heart disease.
