Politicians will take up the cry of Islamic terrorism because it frees them from any immediate need to take on the real -- and politically dangerous -- problem of gun control. Most of them are cowards when it comes to hard truths and the difficult need to lay them convincingly before the public. It is always more expedient to rile the masses than educate them.

Oh, no! Not another American war against evil! This time, it's the Islamic State (IS). After the attacks in Paris, Barack Obama, spokesman-in-chief for the United States of America, called that crew "the face of evil." Shades of George W. Bush. The "evildoers" are back. And from every mountaintop, it seems, America now rings with calls to ramp up its war machine.

if a president asks for war and a congress considers giving him what he wants, have some rules in place so we do the kind of accounting that we do for fiscal budgets. The price is far higher than we are usually led to believe.
