North Korea Boosts Coastal Defenses Following "Declaration Of War" Speech

North Korea appears to be following through with its threat to shoot down US fighter jets and bombers that travel near its airspace, as US jets and bombers did on Saturday, according to a Yonhap report - the latest sign that North Korea intends to follow through with threats made by Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho during a speech outside the UN on Monday.

Following the startling, impromptu allegation on Monday morning by North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, who accused Trump of declaring war on North Korea, and warned Pyongyang would shoot down US jets, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday dismissed North Korea’s claims as "absurd."

“We have not declared war on North Korea and frankly the suggestion of that is absurd,” Sanders said during today's press briefing.

The war of words between Trump and Kim escalated once again in the late hours on Saturday night, when President Trump sent another belligerent tweet directed at North Korea saying that if the country's foreign minister was speaking for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in his threatening speech at the United Nations, "they won't be around much longer."

"Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

Just before North Korea’s foreign minister was due to address the United Nations, the Pentagon announced that U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighter jets flew in international airspace over waters east of North Korea on Saturday, in a show of force which "demonstrated the range of military options available to President Donald Trump." The flight was the farthest north of the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea that any U.S. fighter jet or bomber has flown in the 21st century, the Pentagon added.
