Islamic State Militant Kills Own Mother In Public For ISIS

An Islamic State militant has publicly executed his own mother after she advised him to leave ISIS, in the city of Raqqa, according to a Syrian human rights group. The Guardian reports: The woman, in her 40s, had reportedly warned her son that a US-backed alliance would wipe out Isis and had encouraged him to leave the city with her. She was detained after he informed the group of her comments, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that monitors the war through a network of sources on the ground.

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, have thrown the debate about ISIS into overdrive, particularly among the presidential candidates.  Several strands have emerged from these discussions, but I think that their taxonomy is not often clearly laid out.  I would therefore like to try to do this.

I think that there are three inter-related strands to the discussion, which I summarize below:

"Pray For Us": Libya Issues "Cry For Help" As ISIS Advances On Oil Fields

“We are helpless and not being able to do anything against this deliberate destruction to the oil installations. NOC urges all faithful and honorable people of this homeland to hurry to rescue what is left from our resources before it is too late.”

That’s from Libya’s National Oil Corp and as you might have guessed, it references the seizure of state oil assets by Islamic State, whose influence in the country has grown over the past year amid the power vacuum the West created by engineering the demise of Moammar Qaddafi.

Female ISIS Torturer Kills Syrian Girl Over Her Dress

A girl from Syria was tortured to death at the hands of a female ISIS extremist, for not complying with the Islamic caliphate’s dress code. Signs on her body reveal that she could have been beaten to death by ISIS terrorists, in the northern city of Manbij. ABNA reports: The 21-year-old victim, who was arrested last week for violating the Islamic dress imposed by ISIS extremists, died under torture at the hands of an ISIS female, known as Oum Farouq, in the ISIS detention center in the Syrian border city of Manbij.
