Chinese Media: Large Scale War If US Blockades South China Sea

Following Rex Tillerson’s “astonishing” and “unprofessional” comments made during his confirmation hearing, Chinese state media has predicted a “large scale war” in the South China Sea if US tries stopping China accessing its man-made islands. The former ExxonMobil CEO likened China’s island-building in the South China Sea to “Russia’s taking of Crimea” during his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Trump’s nominee for secretary of state also sent a signal to Beijing, “first the island building stops, and second your access to those islands is also not going to be allowed.” Op-ed in Chinese state media Global Times reads: Due to his intimate relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tillerson is the most controversial candidate among President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees for his cabinet and is considered the one most likely to be vetoed by the Senate. It is suspected that he merely wanted to curry favor from senators and increase his chances of being confirmed by intentionally showing a tough stance toward China. Tillerson did not give details of how he would achieve his self-proclaimed goals.
