Facebook, Instagram Experiencing "Extreme" Outages As Complaints Pile Up

Facebook and Instagram are down for thousands of users across the world this morning, with websites like Outage Report recording “extreme” outages in the US Hungary, Kosovo, Germany, Poland and other countries. The sites went down shortly after 11 a.m.

This is the second widespread outage for both social networks (Instagram is owned by Facebook) in less than two months. Facebook blamed the most recent outage, which occurred on Aug. 26, on unspecified “technical issues.”

Most complaints are reporting a total blackout with many others complaining that users are unable to log in. Many other sites are showing up as having "extreme" outages, according to NBC 4.

The outage doesn’t appear to be affecting all users, and the cause for issues aren’t immediately clear.  Facebook has yet to issue a statement.

The website outage report said almost 2,000 users had complained that they couldn’t reach the site in the last 20 minutes, while downdetector.com said it had seen a spike in reported problems including a total blackout for some users, difficulty logging in and problems with the apps. Facebook users took to Twitter to complain that the site was down, according to the FT.

As the outage continues into its second hour, social media managers everywhere are probably starting to panic....
