Key Takeaways

  • The Ford F-Series was the top-selling car in 24 states in 2024, jumping from 14 in 2023.
  • Following next in line is the Chevrolet Silverado, ranking first in eight states including Arizona, Kentucky, and Minnesota.
  • The Tesla Model Y led new vehicle registrations in California, Nevada, Washington, and New Jersey, standing as the fourth best-selling car in America last year.

In 2024, 16 million new cars were sold in America, with Ford accounting for a 13% share of sales.

The Ford F-Series topped new vehicle registrations in nearly half of U.S. states, but for the first time in almost 50 years, the F-150 lost its spot as the nation’s best-selling vehicle to the Toyota RAV4 SUV.

This graphic shows the best selling vehicle in America by state, based on data from Edmunds.

Across the South, Midwest, and West, Ford’s F-Series pickups led auto sales.

As Ford’s top revenue driver, the company sold 460,915 new vehicles last year. However, F-150 sales dipped 5% in 2024, while Toyota’s RAV4 SUV rose 9% to 475,193, driven by growing demand for hybrids.

Overall, the RAV4 SUV was a top seller in eight U.S. states including Oregon, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s Model Y dominated in Western states, with 372,613 units sold—a 6.6% decline from 2023. Tesla shares initially surged to record highs after Trump’s election but more recently have fallen 40% year-to-date amid backlash against CEO Elon Musk.

Despite this, Tesla may be the most insulated from new tariffs, as the majority of its parts are sourced domestically.
