A monkey has been blamed for a nationwide blackout across Kenya. A wayward primate fell onto a transformer at the Gitaru Power Station and tripped the circuit at around 11.30am Tuesday . The whole of Kenya was without power for a few hours causing paralysis across the nation. Gitaru Power Station is the largest hydroelectric station in East Africa. The Daily Record reports: KenGen released a statement explaining the power blackout, and the unusual reason for it. It said: “At 1129 this morning, a monkey climbed on the roof of Gitaru Power Station and dropped onto the transformer, tripping it.” “This caused other machines at the power station to trip on overload resulting in a loss of more than 180MW form this plant, which triggered a national power blackout. “The system has since been restored and all our power generating units are operating normally. “KenGen power installations are secured by electric fencing which keeps away marauding wild animals. “We regret this isolated incident and the company is looking at ways of further enhancing security at all our power plants.” Local press reported that the Gitaru station is the country’s biggest, and that the service industry ground to a halt after the outage hit [...]
