A powerful earthquake has rocked northern Indonesia leaving as many as 97 people dead and several hundred injured. The magnitude 6.5 quake struck off the coast of Sumatra Island in the early hours of Wednesday, where dozens of buildings have collapsed and many people are feared trapped under rubble. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck just offshore at 05:03 local time (22:03 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 8km. A rescue operation is under way in the Aceh province and the casualty count is expected to increase.

Three weeks after a Russian fighter jet crashed in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after launching from its aircraft carrier near the coast of Syria, overnight a fighter jet based on the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov skid off the deck during landing and became lost at sea after an arrestor gear line snapped and failed to stop the aircraft, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

A study by a team of international scientists claims that there is a fundamental relationship between mercury and autism. Their research results show that children with autism spectrum disorder had significantly higher levels of mercury when compared with healthy control children They found that those children with the highest levels of mercury had the most severe autism symptoms. Natural Blaze reports: A direct correlation was also observed between levels of mercury toxicity and the severity of autistic behavior.

At least nine people were confirmed dead and 25 others are unaccounted for after a fire broke out during a rave at a "huge" warehouse in Oakland, California, local media reported on Saturday, according to city fire officials, cited by KTVU.

A bizarre “bio warfare” storm has killed five people in Kuwait, just days after a similar storm hit Australia killing six and leaving thousands of others hospitalized.  Five expatriate workers died from “severe asthma attacks” during the freak storms, as torrential rain hit Kuwait on Friday. According to local news, two Egyptians and a 35-year-old Indian immigrant passed away at Mubarak Al-Kabir Hospital during the unusual weather. Two other people died of asthma after reporting to a hospital in the district of Al-Farwaniya.
