Saudi "Shock And Awe" Sparks Buying Panic In Crude - WTI At 17-Month Highs

Despite Saudi Arabia pumping record amounts of crude, the energy complex has spiked 6% higher tonight after two major headlines. First, Russia and other non-OPEC nations agreed to join the OPEC pledge to reduce production; and then, in what some are calling their "whatever it takes" moment, Saudi Arabia surprised the market by saying it will cut more than previously agreed.

Saudi Arabia will “cut substantially” below the target agreed last month with OPEC members, Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih says.

British officials are not to happy about Boris Johnson’s recent criticism of their ally Saudi Arabia. Last week Johnson, the UK foreign secretary, blasted the Kingdom over its “proxy wars” in the Middle East and its military aggression against Yemen. Downing Street has been trying to gloss over Johnson’s remarks saying they are his own personal views and do not represent “the government’s position” His comments emerged just as Theresa May returned from a visit to Bahrain where she had dinner with the leaders of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

Going into the Algiers OPEC meeting in late September, the prevailing sentiment among the analyst community was that there is no way any deal will get done: after all there was no secret that the recent animosity between Iran and Saudi Arabia had recent reached unprecedented levels, with both side directly involved across from each other in the Syrian proxy war.
