The Biggest U.S. Football Stadiums Aren’t in the NFL

When it comes to the biggest football stadiums in America, college football dominates. In fact, the 13 largest stadiums are all home to college teams.

In this graphic, created in partnership with Terzo, we rank the biggest football stadiums and highlight how the NFL measures up. It’s part of our Markets in a Minute series, which highlights quick economic insights.

Ranking the Biggest Football Stadiums in America

Often called “The Big House,” Michigan Stadium has the largest capacity. Its construction was championed by the Michigan Wolverines’ head coach in the early 1920s given the team’s success and football’s increasing popularity.

At its opening in 1927 the stadium had nearly 85,000 seats, and it has undergone numerous renovations since to reach its current capacity. The location of the one “extra” seat is unknown, but it is in honor of previous long-time athletics director Fritz Crisler.

Rank Name of Stadium Capacity (No. of People) Type of Stadium
1 Michigan Stadium 107,601 College
2 Beaver Stadium 106,304 College
3 Ohio Stadium 102,780 College
4 Kyle Field 102,733 College
5 Tiger Stadium 102,321 College
6 Neyland Stadium 101,915 College
7 Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium 100,119 College
8 Bryant-Denny Stadium 100,077 College
9 Sanford Stadium 93,033 College
10 Rose Bowl 89,702 College
11 Ben Hill Griffin Stadium 88,548 College
12 Jordan-Hare Stadium 88,043 College
13 Memorial Stadium 85,458 College
14 MetLife Stadium 82,500 NFL

Coming in at second place, Beaver Stadium at Penn State has a capacity of just over 106,000 seats. However, the stadium is currently undergoing renovations and is expected to have seating capacity of over 109,000 by the October 10 home game. This would make it the largest of all U.S. football stadiums.

Why College Stadiums Are Larger Than NFL Stadiums

College football began to take off in the early 1900s, before any NFL teams existed. As crowds grew, and an economic boom began in the ‘20s, colleges devoted significant money to their football stadiums. Competition between schools also encouraged colleges to frequently expand their stadium capacity.

In contrast, the NFL got its start much later, becoming popular during the TV era. Historically, many NFL stadiums were funded by taxpayers which somewhat limited expansions, while colleges typically own their stadium and the land around it.

On top of this, there’s a financial reason for colleges to maximize seating. There are relatively few home games per year, meaning that large crowds help to maximize football college revenue from each game. As a result, college stadiums typically focus on bleacher seating to pack in as many people as possible. Meanwhile, NFL stadiums focus on premium seating, luxury suites, and amenities to generate more money per fan.

Even the largest NFL stadium, MetLife Stadium, comes in as the fourteenth largest football stadium with 30% fewer seats than Michigan Stadium.

Capacity matters off the field, too. See how Terzo makes contract reviews 50 times faster to give your team more capacity for what matters.
