Trump Jr. Lawyers Up As Potential Senate Intel Committee Hearing Looms

Well that escalated quickly.  After volunteering just over an hour ago to cooperate with the Senate Intelligence Committee, Donald Trump Jr. has apparently now joined with most of the other members of the Trump campaign in hiring his own attorney for the various "Russia probes" that are underway.

 

According to his website, Futeras' firm, which bears his name, specializes in "white collar criminal and regulatory defense" cases.

The firm regularly represents individuals and entities in white-collar investigations and prosecutions. We have represented lawyers and medical professionals, accountants, private equity and fund principals, officers, directors and employees of public and private companies, hedge funds, banking and brokerage industry professionals, investors and others in the financial industry.

 

The firm has substantial experience in regulatory and securities related investigations brought by the SEC or prosecutors concerning: market manipulation, regulatory violations, black-out period disclosures, insider trading, improper short-selling, restricted stock sales, misleading or false announcements, press releases or corporate statements, corporate conflicts of interest, use of improper investment and public equity vehicles, accounting and inventory irregularities, market-timing and late trading, public corruption and payments to third-party introducers and Martin Act violations. The firm has represented individuals in criminal tax, bank and mortgage fraud, health-care, Medicaid and Medicare fraud investigations and prosecutions. The firm has represented individuals charged with computer virus creation, spam dissemination and related computer offenses.

Update 1:  Apparently Trump Jr. is an avid reader of The Hill as shortly after they posted an article noting Senator Susan Collins' interest in having him appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he responded via Twitter:

It seems as though Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with the now infamous "Kremlin-linked" lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, could earn him a fun-filled day before the Senate Intelligence Committee....that is, if Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) has anything to say about it. 

 

Of course, as we noted over the weekend (see: Trump's Son Said To Have Met With Russian Lawyer After "Promise Of Damaging Hillary Info": NYT), the New York Times first revealed that Donald Trump Jr., together with then campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner - but without Donald Trump himself being present - met at the Trump Tower with a lawyer who was allegedly "Kremlin connected" on June 9, 2016 after reportedly promising damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Trump Jr. has since indicated that the meeting produced no "information helpful to the campaign"  and suggested that the promise of damaging Clinton material was simply a ruse to get an audience with a Trump campaign official to discuss adoption of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act.

I was asked to have a meeting by an acquaintance I knew from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant with an individual who I was told might have information helpful to the campaign. I was not told her name prior to the meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to attend, but told them nothing of the substance. We had a meeting in June 2016. After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information. She then changed subjects and began discussing the adoption of Russian children and mentioned the Magnitsky Act. It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting. I interrupted and advised her that my father was not an elected official, but rather a private citizen, and that her comments and concerns were better addressed if and when he held public office. The meeting lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes. As it ended, my acquaintance apologized for taking up our time. That was the end of it and there was no further contact or follow-up of any kind. My father knew nothing of the meeting or these events.

Trump Jr. also mocked the "bombshell" New York Times article earlier this morning, saying he was "obviously the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent."

 

And the White House weighed in saying there was "nothing inappropriate" about Trump Jr.'s meeting

 

As for the 'acquaintance' that helped broker the meeting with Trump Jr., as we noted over the weekend, that turned out to be music PR rep Rob Goldstone who has seemingly corroborated Trump Jr.'s story, albeit in a rather delayed fashion.

 

Ironically, to Trump Jr.'s point, that infamous "Trump Dossier," which appeared back in January (think Golden Showers), was compiled by ex-British intelligence official Chris Steele and was allegedly sourced from several Russia-based contacts, was shared with various members of the Hillary Clinton campaign yet not a single Senate or House committee has launched an investigation to figure out whether Hillary 'colluded' with British and/or Russian intelligence to undermine the campaign of Donald Trump...very odd.  We're sure it's just a simple oversight.
