President Donald Trump has suggested that Canada become the 51st state, repeatedly referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor.”
This graphic presents the results of a survey conducted by Ipsos, gathering Canadians’ opinions on Trump’s idea of Canada integrating with the United States. The Ipsos poll was conducted between January 9 and 13, 2025, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online.
Younger Generations See a Bigger Possibility
The poll shows that the majority of Canadians are against the idea—over 70% would never vote for Canada to become part of the U.S.
However, younger generations appear more open to the idea. 43% of Canadians aged 18–34 would vote to join the U.S. if citizenship and asset conversion were guaranteed, compared to only 17% of those 55 and older.
