Protests After Utah Police Shoot Teen Who Was Carrying A Broomstick

Protests erupted after Utah police shot a 16-year-old boy in the chest and stomach because he was brandishing a broomstick. Abdi Mohamed was hospitalized in downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday night and is said to be in a critical condition. About 100 riot police tried to the disperse angry crowds who started throwing glass and rocks following the incident. According to witness accounts, excessive force had been used by the police and the teenager had not given time to comply with their orders The officer who shot the boy had been responding to an unrelated call on Saturday when two teenagers were spotted arguing with a man. The Free Thought Project reports: Salt Lake Police confirmed to the Salt Lake Tribune late Saturday that one officer, and possibly a second, were involved in the shooting. Det. Greg Wilking also confirmed shots had been fired, but did not disclose how many. According to a tweet by the Salt Lake Police, “officers on unrelated call in area, alerted to assault in progress, tried to engage altercation.” Witnesses to the shooting say the teen was involved in an altercation with another individual.
