From the initial discovery in the heart of Ugandan forest darkness to mysterious genetically-modified Mosquitoes in Brazil, the newest threat to human health (most notably pregnant women) is the ominous-sounding Zika virus. The World Health Organization announced it will convene an Emergency Committee under International Health Regulations on Monday, February 1, concerning the Zika virus ‘explosive’ spread throughout the Americas. The virus reportedly has the potential to reach pandemic proportions — possibly around the globe. But understandingwhy this outbreak happened is vital to curbing it. As the WHO statement said:

GM Mosquitoes May Be Responsible For Zika Virus Outbreak

A batch of GM mosquitoes released in Brazil earlier in 2015 completely decimated the local mosquito population, and may be responsible for the current outbreak of the deadly Zika virus spreading the globe.  According to a reddit user, mankind’s arrogance may have well and truly backfired on us: Here is Oxitec back in 2015 proudly announcing that their GM mosquito has decimated the local mosquito population in a field trial: Releases of the genetically engineered Oxitec mosquito, commonly known as ‘Friendly Aedes aegypti’, reduced the dengue mosquito population in an area of Juazeiro, Brazil

Brazil Deploys 200,000 Soldiers To Deal With Deadly Zika Virus

Brazil have deployed over 200,000 military troops to go ‘house to house’ in order to attempt to bring the Zika virus outbreak under control.  Zika-carrying mosquitoes have been blamed for causing a birth defect epidemic, rapidly spreading across the world. Soldiers will visit homes across Brazil offering advice and medical assistance to people suffering from the virus. Dailymail.co.uk reports: The government, under growing pressure to deal with the crisis, will also hand out repellent to at least 400,000 pregnant women on social welfare.
