While everyone likes to point the finger at Amazon, the growing retail apocalypse in America can't be tied to just one catalyst. Certainly, there is no doubt that Amazon is taking a toll on brick-and-mortar retailers but massive excess capacity, perpetually over-levered capital structures and a constant lack of capital investment have undoubtedly helped accelerate the decline.
With a stock price surge of 13% after Amazon’s most recent quarterly filing, Wall Street analysts were reportedly “shocked” by the company’s rapid growth. The e-commerce juggernaut beat both quarterly revenue and earnings forecasts, and continues to trailblaze with a 34% revenue growth rate.

Onto one of the main events this week, after the FOMC passed without a flutter and the BoE meet Thursday morning to deliver what many anticipate will be a 25bp hike to reverse the emergency move last summer. As such, many are pondering whether this intended move - signalled pretty insistently in the prior 2 meetings - is a mere readjustment of the knee-jerk move last summer or whether this is the start of a tightening cycle.
