Father Cassian Steps Down

Shocking news from Norcia this morning, in this letter Father Cassian sent out to the monks’ supporters worldwide:

In the history of every new community, the transition from the founder to the next generation of leadership is a positive sign of growth and maturity. I am happy to announce that the monastic community of Norcia has reached this important moment.

Blind Leading The Blind

The Guardian, the voice of the left-wing British establishment, has published a media guide for readers who would like to understand American conservatism while minimizing their contact with actual conservatives. The writer is Jason Wilson, an Australian who lives in Portland, Oregon, so you know he’s really in touch with the big, hot-blooded heart of America. Wilson writes:

Are the Lights Back On in Gary?

I knew my involvement in civic matters in northwest Indiana would eventually take me to Gary, about 25 miles from my town of Valparaiso. As I’ve driven along Interstate 90 heading to and from Chicago, I’ve often peered down from the expressway into the city’s empty streets and dilapidated neighborhoods. For many long-time residents of the area, the town’s very name is an epithet for a landscape of failure and fear where it’s thought that no one stays who can find a way to leave.

Foreign Policy and the ‘Chosen People’ Narrative

I enjoyed reading Sam Goldman’s review of my play Arguing With God. AWG uses familiar stories from the Old Testament to expound a general theory of man. Tribalism (i.e., judging based on tribal membership in lieu of character and accomplishments) seems hard-wired into the species. Every tribe is convinced that its members are a chosen people or a master race anointed to dominate the others, by force and violence if necessary. Unspeakable crimes are committed again and again in the name of a chosen people.
