Cyclosilicates form hexagonal rings that give birth to emerald and aquamarine, while nesosilicates such as garnet sparkle in jewelry and power industrial sandblasting. Even common beach sand is mostly quartz, a simple silicon-oxygen network hiding in plain sight.
