Key Takeaways

  • As of July 15, 2025, there are a total of 1,307 confirmed measles cases across 40 states, with 164 of these cases hospitalized.

Since the start of 2025, the United States has experienced a steep rise in measles cases. With 1,307 cases confirmed across 40 states by mid-July, the outbreak has surpassed 2019’s total and is on track to be the worst in over three decades.

This data visualization highlights weekly counts of newly confirmed cases from 2023 to mid-2025 using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Measles Cases in the U.S. Spike in 2025

So far in 2025, there have been 1,307 confirmed measles cases, far more than 2023 and 2024’s case counts, which were 63 and 283 respectively.

Year Confirmed measles cases in the U.S.
2023 63
2024 283
2025 YTD (as of July 15) 1307

The average weekly new case count in 2025 is currently around 47, significantly higher than in prior years. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases, with an R0 range of 12-18, meaning a single person can infect, on average, 12-18 people in an undervaccinated population.

With nearly half the year remaining, the U.S. could see measles numbers not witnessed since 1992, when there were 2,126 cases.

Low MMR Vaccination Rates Spur Measles Outbreak

2025’s measles outbreak in the U.S. started from an undervaccinated Mennonite community in West Texas, with the state now having over 700 confirmed cases. Around 88% of cases in the country are connected to this outbreak.

The CDC notes that Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage in kindergarteners fell to 92.7% in 2023-24, below the ~95% needed for herd immunity.

The current outbreak has spread across 40 states, a breadth not seen in over a decade. Along with 164 hospitalizations so far, there have been three confirmed deaths from measles in 2025: two children in Texas and one adult in New Mexico.
