In a ruling sure to heighten migration tensions in the EU, Italy’s highest court rules “Theft Not a Crime if Hungry“.

Stealing small amounts of food to stave off hunger is not a crime, Italy’s highest court of appeal has ruled.

 

Judges overturned a theft conviction against Roman Ostriakov after he stole cheese and sausages worth €4.07 (£3; $4.50) from a supermarket.

That America is in the throes of a systemic health crisis can no longer be denied. According to the U.S. Department of Health And Human Services, more than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are overweight or obese.  (Overweight is typically defined as a body-mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher. A BMI of 24.9 is not exactly featherweight; I would have to add 30 pounds to reach a BMI of 24.9. )

In 1906, Alfred Henry Lewis stated, “There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.” Since then, his observation has been echoed by people as disparate as Robert Heinlein and Leon Trotsky.

The key here is that, unlike all other commodities, food is the one essential that cannot be postponed. If there were a shortage of, say, shoes, we could make do for months or even years. A shortage of gasoline would be worse, but we could survive it, through mass transport or even walking, if necessary.

Fast Food Contains Alarming Amounts Of Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals

A new study has found that fast food contains an “alarming” amount of potentially toxic industrial chemicals like phthalates, which  are used in the manufacture of plastics and adhesives. According to researchers at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health, people who consume more fast food were exposed to higher levels of the hormone-disrupting chemicals that have been linked to infertility, particularly in males The findings were published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
