With a $25.7 trillion market capitalization, the information technology sector covers more than a fifth of global financial markets.

Today, tech companies make up six of the top 10 most valuable firms in America as of February 10, 2025. In China, Tencent and Alibaba stand among the 10 largest firms by market cap. A similar trend is seen in Europe, where business software firm, SAP closes off the top three with a $333 billion market cap.

Ranking next in line is the financial sector, towering at $21.1 trillion in value. While Berkshire Hathaway is the most valuable in America (and the world), it is the only financial firm in the top 10. By contrast, four of China’s top 10 companies are large banks. Notably, ICBC, China’s largest bank by market cap, rivals Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley in valuation.

Overall, the industrials sector is home to more publicly-listed firms than any other sector, at 8,780 worldwide. This trend is mirrored in the S&P 500, where the number of industrial firms surpass those in the information technology sector. At the same time, it is far less concentrated, with the top 10 companies by market cap making up 36% of the sector as of June 2024. By contrast, the 10 largest information technology companies accounted for 77% of the sector.

Beyond America, industrial firms dominate in Japan, making up 23% of its stock market, led by Toyota, the largest auto manufacturer in the world.
