Comparing The Cost of Living Around the World
The amount of money that’s needed to pay for day-to-day expenses like housing and food varies greatly from city to city. And some cities, like New York City, are known as especially expensive places to live.
So how do everyday expenses in New York City truly compare in costs to places like Beirut, Lebanon, or Bangalore, India?
A few weeks ago, the office of Council Member Helen Rosenthal of New York's 6th District published the results of a business survey conducted on the Upper West Side that showed, among other things, that some 12% of retail store fronts lay vacant.
Of the 1,332 storefronts that we surveyed, we identified 1,170 active businesses -- 88%.
Twelve percent of storefronts (161) were unoccupied. Please note that "unoccupied" includes recently closed businesses, as well as new spaces that were not yet leased.
The FBI has arrested a Modesto, CA convert to Islam for what they say was a plot to attack San Francisco's Pier 39 on Christmas using a combination "of a vehicle and firearms." The suspect cheered the October 31, 2017 truck attack in New York City in which 8 people were killed, referenced President Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem ("Al Quds") as the capital of Israel, and said he was "ready to die" according to the FBI.

Most of New York City’s largest developers are probably optimistic about the near future now that one of their own is occupying the most powerful office in the world. Bu, this very specific group of taxpayers stands to benefit immensely from several of the provisions that have appeared in the Senate or House plans: Repealing the AMT and estate taxes would allow them (and their heirs) to shave a pile of percentage points off their tax bills. And those are just two examples.
New York's billionaire hedge fund managers have blazed the trail south in recent years with the likes of David Tepper, Paul Tudor Jones and Eddie Lampert all ditching the Empire State for Florida...a state which brings not only pristine beaches and year-round golf weather but also the added benefit of a 0% personal income tax rate.
